The 5 advantages of using VR in the onboarding process

Onboarding new employees is a labor-intensive task, especially in organizations with many employees, diverse locations and / or complex activities. The arrival of Covid-19 and the switch to remote work has made onboarding even more complicated. However, techniques such as virtual reality can simplify and improve this process. In this article, we list five advantages of onboarding with VR.

1. Time saving

In a VR environment you can let the employee have conversations with colleagues, without them actually having to make time. By recording a conversation and incorporating it into the training, you can have an introductory meeting at any time.

For example, the CEO can tell you what the company’s mission is and how they want to achieve it. The employee can see what the dress code is and can even see what their lunch will look like. The more the employee can see of the company before starting, the more he will feel connected to the company.

By using VR, you as a company can go through the VR onboarding process much faster and more efficiently, without the need for additional employees.

2. Work in more effectively

Walmart is the largest in VR training, with more than 1 million employees being trained with VR. The reason for the successful training is a good combination of real-life scenarios, immersive video and realistic audio.

These realistic training courses give new employees more confidence in their own skills and work more effectively in practice. This is especially applicable for activities that involve many risks. By using VR training you can put the employees in situations that would not be possible in real training.

3. Focused employees

The new employee can become easily distracted by all the new impressions, so it can be difficult to maintain attention. Virtual reality allows you to minimize the distractions because you have control over what the person sees.

Research shows that a VR training is twice as effective as a training from a book. One reason for this is that people are focused in VR and are included in the experience, which ensures that the material is better remembered.

4. Create consistency

It can happen that the supervisor is having a bad day. This can lead to a lower quality training where not all points are covered. By doing the onboarding process in virtual reality, you only have to record the training once. You can then show this to all new employees, so that you can provide consistent training.

5. Higher involvement

The support offered by virtual reality is a good way to prepare employees for the new position. One survey found that 49% of the “millennials” generation said they want a better onboard experience. VR can provide a better onboarding experience for new employees.
