Montpelier Police Department is using Virtual Reality technology for its officers to train them on maintaining law and order and get skilled at de-escalating stressful situations like domestic violence and psychological issues.
In one of the VR scenarios, a police officer is teleported to a street where he encounters a person suffering from mental illness. The simulation allows the law enforcement officer to make decisions out of the given choices. For example, choosing whether to arrest the person suffering from a mental health issue or transporting him to a hospital.
According to MPD chief, Brain Peete, Virtual Reality for training will help the department analyze its role in the community. Apart from that, it will help increase knowledge retention within trainees so that they make informed decisions and de-escalate intense situations.
