Japanese media-artist Masaki Fujihata created an AR application which lets Hong Kong citizens travel back in time. The app gives people the option to add filters of Hong Kong’s street activities from the 1950s onto their mobile devices.
To connect the past with the present, 70 synchronised cameras were used to recreate the scenes. The images were then converted into 3D figures using photogrammetry software. Citizens are able to scan markers all around the city and place the animations anywhere they want. The 3D models make it possible to walk around the animations and see them from every side.
This innovative way of displaying history in a digital world created only positive reactions. People were surprised to see how the city looked in the time of their grandparents.
