Hamilton Police is using Virtual Reality to skill police officers in de-escalating challenging situations involving mental health and hostage negotiation.
The VR training allows an officer to have a verbal interaction with a virtual person who has PTSD and injuries to his face. Then, the officer learns that the person is afraid of intruders coming into his home and attacking him. As the simulation progresses, the officer speaks to him calmly and assures him that he is safe. The simulation ends with the arrival of the paramedics to check the injuries of the virtual person.
Jennifer Lavoie, a researcher at Laurier, believes that VR helps law enforcement officers not only practice de-escalation strategies but also learn different kinds of communication techniques.
