ECU School of Dental Medicine | Virtual Reality
The ECU School of Dental Medicine is integrating VR technology into its curriculum to teach students dentistry skills and ease dental anxiety among patients.
Using the VR simulation, the first year dental students will be able to visualize detailed layers of a tooth anatomy including enamel, dentin and the structure itself. Moreover, students can also visualize the oral cavity and virtually perform a root canal to eliminate the bacteria before performing it on a real patient.
According to Hanan Elgendy, clinical assistant professor, VR training will help students use the creative side of the brain and improve eye-hand coordination. Additionally, it will help students become confident in their knowledge of the complex tooth structures.
