Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, emergency services are unable to provide hands-on training, but delaying training is not an option for emergency responders. That is why the American city of Austin is working with virtual reality company ATS to train emergency responders.
The emergency staff learns in the so-called ‘just-in-time training’ how to use the ambulance vehicle, where all the equipment is and how to use the right equipment. In addition, they learn how to act at accident sites where there are many victims, such as a traffic accident with a bus. The staff learns to analyze the situation, set priorities and start the right protocols.
During the development of the training, research was conducted showing that people remember information better and make fewer mistakes after following the training. Moreover, participants learned in the virtual training faster than those who followed a personal training.
