Cheetos’ Super Bowl commercial gave Snapchat users the chance to “steal” free bags of Cheetos. It was possible to scan the commercial via Snapchat on Super Bowl Sunday and claim a free bag.
Snapchat users can scan one of 1440 unique frames at any time of the commercial. After scanning, a bag of chips appears via an AR animation that can be claimed by the user. The advertisement uses ‘markerless’ AR, so no marker is required for activation, one frame of the video is sufficient.
The ‘snap to steal’ commercial received many positive reactions and received attention on various marketing blogs. The hashtag #ItWasntMe is widely used on TikTok and the commercial has now more than a million views on YouTube.
