Spine surgeons at Health’s Bennett Medical Center in Stamford, Connecticut, used augmented reality in 12 surgeries. The director of the augmented reality spine program performed the first surgery using this technique on January 28, 2021.
The system includes a headset designed to function as if the surgeon had an x-ray view of the patient’s body. Thanks to the headset, the surgeon looks at the patient during the operation instead of at a screen.
According to director Sandhu, the new technique makes surgery very accurate. “The technology gives us the ability to see through a patient’s tissue.” said director Sandhu. Bennett Medical Center is the only hospital to practice AR spine surgery.
