Bucks County, Pennsylvania has started using Virtual Reality to train officers at the BTPD on improving their crisis response. In November last year, the county launched VR coaching for another department, a crisis intervention team.
The VR training consists of various modules ranging from people dealing with Autism to PTSD, Schizophrenia to Domestic Violence. The training not only puts officers as responders to emergencies but also as ones bearing adversities.
BTPD Police Chief, Matt Phelan says: “VR training helps police officers to de-escalate the crisis and become more empathetic.” Since the training involves officers being in someone else’s shoes, they understand the community member in a better way.
