Antwerp Police Department / Police VR Simulation
The Antwerp police are using virtual reality from September 2021 in order to counter the feeling of being ethnically profiled among citizens. For example, they will learn how to search for someone correctly.
In the VR-training, the inspectors face real-life scenarios. For example, they must make the choice to stop a group of young people or a woman with a baby carriage. The choices made during the simulation affect the scenario. After the training, the choices made are discussed with specifically trained officers.
Thanks to the VR-training, officers can better empathize with citizens because the training provides insight into what impact which type of approach has on a controlled person. Antwerp is the first city in Belgium where this training is held, after Antwerp more cities will use this VR-training.
